Dr Simone Krüger

Biography... 

Simone Krüger is an ethnomusicologist, ethnographer and musician (and at times dancer). She holds a position as Senior Lecturer in Music, Media and Cultural Studies in the Popular Music Studies Unit at Liverpool John Moores University (UK) where she leads higher education courses and modules on globalisation, world music studies, popular music studies, and the role of music in culture. Simone is frequently invited to deliver guest lectures and seminars across universities. In her previous work, she held lectureships at the Universities of Liverpool, Manchester and Bangor, and was an Academic Leader and Research Co-ordinator at Edge Hill University. Simone is a committee member of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology, and also holds the title 'Fellow of the Higher Education Academy' (FHEA). In April 2009, Simone will host the forthcoming Annual Conference of the British Forum for Ethnomusicology.

Simone is an active researcher in the areas of ethnomusicology, music and globalisation, educational anthropology and ethnography, including virtual ethnography.  Current research projects include a LJMU-funded, longitudinal ethnographic study that focuses on people's cultural engagement through music during Liverpool's year as European Capital of Culture '08 (title 'Liverpool 2008: Music, Mediation and Place'); and a PALATINE-funded, collaborative ethnographic project that seeks to assess students' employability in music. A recently completed research project (also funded by PALATINE) led to the production of a student guide to "Ethnography in the Performing Arts" published by the Higher Education Academy.   

Simone is constantly developing her publication record in the academic specialist literature covering a wide range of journals, including Ethnomusicology Forum, Ethnomusicology, British Journal for Music Education, Yearbook for Traditional Music. Her completed monograph entitled Experiencing Ethnomusicology: Teaching and Learning in European Universities will be published by Ashgate in 2009. Simone is currently writing a jointly authored book entitled Media and Globalised Cultures to be published by Palgrave in 2009/10. Simone is also planning a monograph on music ethnography, and another monograph is also planned that will be based on the research conducted into people's musical engagement during Liverpool '08.
